The body of a dirt bike rider has been released to their family after police completed a post-mortem examination.

Northland Detective Senior Sergeant Christan Fouhy said police were continuing to investigate the events that led to the death and to a second rider being injured on Tuesday evening.

“The second bike rider remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition,” Fouhy said.

“A scene examination has now concluded, and the investigation remains ongoing.”

The man was found dead on May 5 about 11.10pm on rural Ngapipito Rd, between Kaikohe and Moerewa.

The second rider was found seriously injured on Tana Rd, which intersects with Ngapipito Rd. Police believed both were knocked off their bikes.

A scene examination took place on Ngapipito Rd and a nearby property this week with a cordon in place.

Fouhy asked anyone with information about what happened on Tuesday evening to contact police online or via 105, using the reference number 260506/1270.

“Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board member Roddy Pihema said earlier the community would be hurting.

“Someone has lost their life.”

He urged people to support the police during their investigation.

“I think the best thing to do is hold our tongues ... let the truth come out.

“Not just for the family, but the community as a whole.”
