Stabbing accused in court
The woman who allegedly fatally stabbed a man near Moerewa can now be named. Julieta Hurenga Beattie, 46, of Onerahi, pleaded not guilty when she appeared in the High Court at Whangārei yesterday via audio visual link from prison. Police were called to a property onTaumatamakuku Cres about 8.45pm on September 15 and found 57-year-old Richard Bristow have been critically injured. He died shortly afterwards. Beatties' trial has been set down for three weeks from October 14, 2019.
Teen remanded in custody
A Kaikohe teenager has appeared in court accused of stabbing a man after a group of youths gate crashed a party last weekend. Te Aoturoa Reihana, 19, was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Kaikohe District Court on Tuesday charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He is due back in court on October 9 for a bail application. The 24-year-old victim was stabbed in the stomach about 3am on Sunday when he asked a group of uninvited youths to leave a party on a private property near Lindvart Park. Police are investigating whether the same youths were involved in an assault on German tourists earlier in the night. Wounding with intent to cause GBH carries a maximum penalty of 14 years jail.
An exhibition that has visited 80 countries and been seen by more than 10 million people has opened at Whangārei Museum, Kiwi North. Anne Frank: Let Me Be Myself uses a combination of excerpts from Anne Frank's diary, historical artifacts, pictures, video and testimonies. The exhibition invites viewers to consider how the same themes of racism and persecution that existed in World War II Europe still affect the modern world. It was officially opened at a ceremony last night and will be in Whangārei until February 3.
Ethnic football on October 14
The third multi ethnic football tournament will be held at the Tikipunga Sports Ground on October 14. Organisers have confirmed the registration of 13 teams in the six-a-side tournament and the winner will represent Whangarei at the New Zealand Community Football Cup in Auckland later this year. A team must have three players from a certain country to form a side and players do not need to live in Whangārei.
