The Mid Northern Rugby Club has received a $2713 grant for rugby balls, training ladders and cones.

One Northland grant

The New Zealand Community Trust has made a grant to the Mid Northern Rugby Football in its March funding round. The trust gave the club $2713 towards rugby balls, training ladders and cones. It was the only grant the trust made in Northland in this funding round. The funding comes from pokie machines and the trust no longer has any in Northland.

Rods and reels taken

An estimated $40,000-plus worth of rods and reels was stolen in a ram raid on Reel Rods at Taipa in the early hours of Sunday morning. Three males were involved, police describing the raid as "reasonably well organised", the thieves targeting high-value items.

A woman doing doughnuts on a Mid North sportsfield didn't reckon on an angry reaction from locals and is now without her wheels for at least a month. The 23-year-old woman was hooning on Simson Park in Moerewa about 6.30pm on Sunday when incensed locals blocked off the exits and called police.

She fled before police arrived but had to leave her car behind, which has been impounded for 28 days. Police say they know who she is. Once she is located she will be charged with driving with sustained loss of traction and possibly also wilful damage to the sportsgrounds.

A 38-year-old Kaikohe woman has been charged with assault with a weapon after allegedly hitting her partner with a claw hammer about 4pm on Sunday. The woman was due in the Kaikohe District Court yesterday. The victim was taken to Bay of Islands Hospital with a sore jaw.

Pair on robbery charges

Two Northlanders jointly charged with the aggravated robbery of a service station have been remanded in custody. Hori Lawrence, 24, of Raumanga, and Jarrod Ham, 21, of Ruakaka, appeared in the Whangarei District Court on Friday facing one charge of the aggravated robbery of Gas in Ruakaka on Thursday last week.

Police allege the duo got away with about $680 cash after threatening a staff member with a glass bottle. Both will reappear on April 16.
