Hatea Loop track

Hatea Loop track

Work is about to begin on a new public toilet next to Whangarei's Te Matau A Pohe Bridge, joining the complement of facilities springing up around the Hatea Loop.

The job had been brought forward from next year as part of bringing Whangarei District Council's infrastructure spend into line, as well as due to public demand for the project.

The $142,000 toilet block would be a twin cubicle "Exeloo" similar to the one at Pohe Island opposite the dog agility park. The facility would be funded from the council's waste and drainage capital spend budget and would be up and running by February next year.

Across the river, a second set of Hatea Loop exercise facilities was almost complete. Following an installation of an all-ages exercise equipment area downstream from the Riverbank Theatre, contractors were working on the new stations at Pohe Island.

The step-up stop, balance beams, sit-up board and chin-up bar, funded by the Northland District Health Board were designed to add more range to the kind of exercise people could do on the well-used loop walk.

They are being installed at four points, starting near the seagull sculpture at Riverside Park and ending on Pohe Island before Te Matau a Pohe. The stations should be finished this week.
