Netball: Whangaruru Premier lead in big-scoring round

The fourth week of the premier netball championship round was notable for some big scores.

The closest game was between Whangaruru Premier and Manawanui Red, the last game of the evening.

Although Whangaruru Premier led from start to finish, the final quarter was close with only a goal in it.

The damage, however, had already been done and Whangaruru Premier won 57-32.

For Whangaruru, Renee Monk at wing defence had a great game on defence and on attack.

Tracey Whitaker at centre and Shawni Paniona at wing attack worked together well and provided good ball for the shooters.

Morgan Taurua at goal shoot and Sophie Tua at goal attack combined beautifully later in the game and displayed some fast, clever exchanges of the ball in the circle.

For Manawanui Red, Irihaapeti Te Whata, who stepped up from the development team at goal keep had a solid game and combined well with Hayley Thompson at goal defence.

Captain Raina Smith at goal attack played some strategic netball to get the ball to Jemma Bicknell at goal shoot.

Manawanui White led against YHPJ Marist 1 from start to finish, winning 70-40.

For Manawanui White, Larissa Hona at wing attack worked tirelessly and was well supported in the midcourt by Kimberley Ruth at centre.

Kahli Anne Reihana at wing defence contested the ball well and at the shooting end, the new combination of Jaelyn Walker [goal shoot] and Sherryn Schraag [goal attack] settled in nicely.

Shanelle Kemp also had a good game at goal defence and applied consistent pressure.

For Marist 1, Bella Drinnan at goal keep and then goal defence was strong on defence and in bringing the ball through the court on attack.

Koea Kaka was also strong at wing attack, providing some good ball to the shooters, while Terrianne Tukulua at goal shoot was mobile around the court.

In the final game of the round, Active Refrigeration Fideliter 1 were unstoppable against the young Whangarei Girls' High School (WGHS Snr 1) side.

This game was dominated by Fideliter 1 and they led from start to finish to stay ahead 77 goals to 32 at the final whistle.

For Fideliter 1, Kacey Potae at goal keep and goal defence was up against several of her Whangarei Netball Centre under-17's teammates and played a disciplined and tidy game to force errors on the Girls' High shooters.

Lara Cooper at centre showed her flair and speed with great movement around the court and delivering accurate ball to her shooters.

Kate Te Whata at goal shoot played a strong holding game and showed good accuracy.

Jasmine Milton at goal keep was a standout for WGHS Snr 1, getting numerous tips and intercepts.

Maddy Gordon at centre and Dani Kirby at wing attack and wing defence also managed numerous tips.
