Grading and grading promotion relegation was finally completed this weekend with games played on Friday night and Saturday.

In grading promotion relegation, the top team from the grade below challenge the bottom team from the grade above.

For premier and premier reserve this saw Active Refrigeration Fideliter 2 and Manawanui Red play each other on Friday night.

This was a close game, with both teams winning a half.

Manawanui Red were up by six goals at halftime, enabling them to sustain a comeback by the Fideliter 2 team and win narrowly by two goals, 18-16.

For premier reserve, the bottom team after grading was Coal Miners Daughter Marist 3, so they were required to wait and play the winner of the Senior A1 grade.

On Saturday Hora Hora 1 and Whangaruru played to determine this.

This was a tightly contested game with Hora Hora 1 the winners, 21-16. They then went on to confidently beat Marist 3, 25-12.

Huanui Silver and Whangarei Girls' High School (WGHS) played for the top of A1 College grade to determine the sixth place in premier reserve.

This game was goal for goal most of the time, with little between these teams - they were also both hungry for the win.

The game resulted in a 15-all draw which meant a goal countback was initiated to determine the winner.

This saw WGHS 10-1, narrowly win a place in premier reserve.

Huanui Silver will now rank top of College A1.

Most grades within the Whangarei Netball Centre (WNC) netball competition have six teams in them.

Seven teams contested for A1 grade so one team had to be automatically relegated.

As a consequence this had a flow-on effect into A2, AR 1 and AR 2 senior grades.

The preliminary competition (played as a round robin with each team playing each other in the grade) starts on Friday.

Premiers will go indoors with three one-hour-long games played at ASB Stadium.

Game times will be 6pm, 7.25pm and 8.50pm.

Premier Reserve also play one-hour games, but on Saturday May 16. All other senior, collegiate and intermediate grades will start on the same date and will play 40-minute games.

Full results are on the WNC website.
