Bus hub improvements

Work to improve the old Rose St bus hub in Whangārei starts next week. Buses will travel to and from Vine St in the meantime. New public toilets, staff facilities, ticketing office, covered seating area, and pedestrian link are going to be built.

Heritage items uncovered

Numerous household items have been discovered during the restoration of a Northland heritage building site. Glass bottles and jars, including a Brylcream jar, Ponds hand cream jar, and a chickory essence bottle, were recently found within the centre of a wall at Edmonds Ruins near Kerikeri. The items were discovered when the wall was being restored by Kerikeri stonemason Ian McDiamard. Heritage New Zealand Northland manager Bill Edwards says after 70 years, the items were in excellent condition. Stonemason John Edmonds began building the house in 1840 which was subsequently finished by his sons over 10 years later. In the 1880s, the house was largely destroyed by fire leaving only the ruins that we know today.

The southbound lane of State Highway 1 between Maromaku and Tōwai was closed for a short time on Tuesday following a crash. A police spokesman said a vehicle towing a caravan crashed and no injuries were reported. Southbound traffic was diverted through Callaghans Rd but northbound traffic remained open. Appliances from Fire and Emergency attended.
