A travelling one-man band is arriving in Whangārei to host a sound journey involving up to 30 instruments.
Described as "mesmerising, earthy, yet otherwordly", Golden Bay's Sika Rose departed the South Island earlier this month to conduct his shows across 13 locations in the North Island. This is his first time in Whangārei and on Monday he will fill Bank St's OneOneSix venue with sounds from the likes of the didgeridoo, drums and native flutes.
The multi-instrumentalist sound artist invites participants to bring a yoga mat, cushion and blanket, and lie down while he takes them on two 40-minute inner journeys of shamanic visioning and sound healing with an interval in between.
Rose will lead a guided visualisation which flows seamlessly into a live sound journey featuring several didgeridoos, the hoop drum, Taos drum, flutes, Taonga pūoro, shells, stones, leaves, voice and more.
"Every journey is unique and everyone's experience will be different," he said. "The primordial sound of the didgeridoo transports some people into ancient landscapes and ancestral stories. Some travel out into the cosmos and see powerful visions. Others experience emotional states or gain practical insights."
Rose creates a safe space to relax deeply and connect with one's inner guidance. He has been offering Sound Journeys internationally for over 25 years and has the blessing of many Māori, Native American and Aboriginal elders, including the Yuin tribe of South Australia.
Participants are recommended to also bring a water bottle and a journal. Sound Journey CDs will be available to buy on the night, cash only. Tickets are $30 online from sikamusic.com in advance or $35 cash on the door if space is available.
The sound journey runs from 7.30pm-9.30pm Monday at OneOneSix Bank St.
