A motorbike rider has been seriously injured in a head-on crash with a car in Hokianga.
The smash occurred at the crest of a hill on unsealed Koutu Loop Rd, east of Opononi, about 5.40pm on Monday.
Senior Sergeant Brian Swann, head of Mid North police, said the crash leftthe 45-year-old rider with multiple injuries including a dislocated shoulder, pelvic and abdominal injuries, a broken right femur and broken left tibia and fibula.
The occupants of the car were uninjured.
The rider was airlifted to Whangarei Hospital in a serious condition by the Northland Rescue Helicopter.
Police, St John Ambulance and volunteers from the Rawene and Kaikohe fire brigades attended. The police serious crash unit was investigating.
Mr Swann said it was not immediately clear who had been at fault.
"It may have been an unfortunate coming together at the crest of a hill. It's a reminder to drive to the conditions and to make sure you have clear view of the road ahead of you," he said.
