More arrests likely in record meth seizure

More people may be arrested as a team of more than 20 detectives continue to investigate a record methamphetamine bust in the Far North.

Multiple inquiries are now underway after almost 500kg of meth was found in a campervan and buried in sand dunes at 90 Mile Beach near Ahipara on Sunday and Monday.

Northland police have handed the investigation over to the Police Organised Crime team, based in Auckland.

National organised crime manager Detective Superintendent Virginia Le Bas this afternoon confirmed that further arrests could be made.

So far, four men have appeared in court in Kaitaia and Manukau charged with importing and possessing methamphetamine.

"More than 20 detectives are working on the operation, with support from staff in Kaitaia and the wider Northland area," Ms Le Bas said.

"Some of the Auckland-based staff have travelled to the Northland area to assist local staff ... and as enquiries continue, we are not ruling out the possibility of further arrests."

She said following coverage in the Herald and other media police have received a slew of calls from members of the public offering information about the meth and the alleged importers.

"The investigation team is now evaluating the information and assessing its relevance," said Ms Le Bas.

"The examinations of the two boats, the Toyota Prado and the campervan in which the meth was found are expected to be completed today, and any exhibits found during this process will be sent for further analysis.

"Thank you to those who have provided us with information so far."

Police are still appealing for information about the haul, and those responsible.

"The public response to the news of this huge seizure has been immense and where possible, we will continue to provide updates, as the joint investigation with our partner agencies continues."
