A raised median strip to built in Moerewa's main street on State Highway 1 will make the section of road safer.

The median strip will prevent motorists driving straight across the state highway or turning right on to the highway, NZ Transport Agency Northland system manager Jacqui Hori-Hoult said.

Drivers will only be able to turn left in and left out of Nisbet St and Wynyard St.

"The local community has been consulted on this safety initiative and they support it," Hori-Hoult said.

"They want it to happen as the median strip is also expected to slow down vehicles travelling through Moerewa."

Councillor Kelly Stratford, from the Far North District Council, said the median strip is a good safety win for Moerewa.

"Local community feedback supported the road narrowing and realignment as possible solutions for reducing cars racing around the Moerewa streets, and driving over speed limits along the state highway and side roads."

Work will start next Monday, March 11 and take about two weeks. There will be traffic management in place with a temporary speed limit to provide a safe work area for the construction crew.

Hori-Hoult thanked motorists for their patience and understanding while this initiative to improve safety for the local community on SH1 is put in place.
