Beachgoers have been warned to stay off sand dunes at Mangawhai Heads after erosion from recent weather.

Up to 2.5m drops have been found north of the surf club, prompting a public safety warning from Kaipara District Council (KDC).

People are urged to avoid the dunes and stay away from the edges.

“We know the dunes are a popular spot, but they’re not safe right now,” a KDC spokesperson said.

Recent weather had eroded the dunes, with drops of up to 2.5m.

The council asked people to not dig or tunnel into the sand, or boogie board, slide or jump down them.

“Stay well back from dune edges and keep a close eye on children and pets, as the edges can give way without warning.

“Digging into sand is especially dangerous. Tunnels can collapse suddenly and cause serious injury or even burial. Sand dunes are unpredictable, particularly after heavy weather.”
