Police have charged a 27-year-old Kaikohe man following an alleged hit-and-run in Ōkaihau on Tuesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Kevan Verry of the Northland criminal investigation branch said a 19-year-old cyclist was allegedly struck by a vehicle on Settlers Way late on Tuesday evening.

The man died from his injuries late on Tuesday night.

Police were contacted by locals around 10.15pm.

Verry said there had been a strong public response following the death.

“We have had a number of locals make contact with us and provide information and I acknowledge them for that.”

Police had been in Ōkaihau yesterday conducting inquiries including checkpoints to identify the alleged vehicle involved, he said.

The Kaikohe man has initially been charged with failing to stop or ascertain injury.

Verry said the investigation was ongoing and police couldn’t rule out further charges.

“We know that there were several vehicles travelling on Settlers Rd at the time, between 10pm and 10.15pm,” he said.

“I’m still asking that those people make contact with us.”

Verry said on Wednesday the victim’s family had been engaged with Victim Support.

“Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time and with what they are going through.”

People can update online or call 105 using reference No 250129/0360.

Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

The man charged is expected to appear in the Kaikohe District Court on Friday.
