Two people were allegedly stabbed at a New Year’s Eve party in Whangārei overnight.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer said police were called to an address on William Jones Drive, Ōtangarei, just after 2am.

“Two people were located with injuries consistent with stab wounds and one was transported to hospital in a serious but not life-threatening condition,” he said.

The other victim was treated by ambulance staff at the scene.

The alleged offender, a 19-year-old man, fled before police arrived but was later arrested this morning without incident.

He will appear in the Whangārei District Court tomorrow charged with assault with a weapon, and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Pilmer said police would like to hear from anyone who was at the party and may have witnessed the assault.
