A disqualified driver allegedly led Whangarei police on a nearly 32km chase before he was arrested short of where road spikes were laid to stop him.

About 2pm on Saturday, a 26-year-old driver of a Toyota Curren allegedly failed to stop for police on Great North Rd in Kamo and a pursuit began.

He turned right into Pipiwai Rd, then drove on to Kokopu Rd and then Whatitiri Rd in Mangakahia, police said.

Road spikes were put in place south of the Twin Bridges. Two police vehicles were involved in the chase.

Police would not say what speeds the driver reached during the chase. The vehicle stopped short of the road spikes and allegedly attempted to do a U-turn.

Police got to the car and arrested the man.

He is facing charges of driving while disqualified third and subsequent offence, failing to stop, dangerous driving and possession of cannabis.

He has been bailed to appear in the Whangarei District Court today.
