He was also a Northland board member for more than 35 years as well as a director of coaches, a referee appointee, a secretary and a long-serving judicial member.
Murray was a New Zealand rugby league player and coach who played professionally for Wigan.
He played for the Takahiwai Warriors alongside twin brother Thomas as well as for Northland, Northern Districts and the New Zealand Maori.
Murray coached Northland in the 1990s and was influential in getting the Northern Storm accepted into the 2006 Bartercard Cup.
RLN General Manager Duane Fyfe said it was important to remember those who have given to the sport over the years.
"There have been quite a few administrations who have run rugby league in Northland," he said.
"The clubs haven't changed over the years so we wanted to tie back to the history of people involved in the administration so we don't forget them."
The teams who make the finals will be playing off for the John and Martha Wells Trophy.
John Wells represented Northland and Northland Maori before taking on coaching and managing roles.
Wells coached Portland, was selector for Northland and managed Northland under-19s and Northland.
He was also chairman of the Schoolboy Rugby League Board.
Seven teams are playing for the various trophies this season as Hikurangi Stags have returned to the competition after a one-year hiatus.
They will be joined by defending champions Takahiwai, Hora Hora, Northern Wairoa, Portland, Otangarei and Moerewa.
The first round sees Hikurangi at home against Moerewa, Portland hosting Otangarei and Takahiwai travel to Northern Wairoa.
Hora Hora have the bye.
All games kick off at 2:30pm.
