The new Rugby League Northland Premiership season is looking to the future by harking back to the past.

The first round kicks off today with seven sides vying for Northland league supremacy.

But to add to what is sure to be a big weekend for league is the introduction of rounds celebrating people from Northland's league past.

Round one sees teams face off for the Graham Pitts Cup, which is followed by round two's Anthony Murray Cup.

Pitts has been involved with rugby league in Northland for nearly 70 years, starting with the now defunct West End Jumbos.

He was also a Northland board member for more than 35 years as well as a director of coaches, a referee appointee, a secretary and a long-serving judicial member.

Murray was a New Zealand rugby league player and coach who played professionally for Wigan.

He played for the Takahiwai Warriors alongside twin brother Thomas as well as for Northland, Northern Districts and the New Zealand Maori.

Murray coached Northland in the 1990s and was influential in getting the Northern Storm accepted into the 2006 Bartercard Cup.

RLN General Manager Duane Fyfe said it was important to remember those who have given to the sport over the years.

"There have been quite a few administrations who have run rugby league in Northland," he said.

"The clubs haven't changed over the years so we wanted to tie back to the history of people involved in the administration so we don't forget them."

The teams who make the finals will be playing off for the John and Martha Wells Trophy.

He was also chairman of the Schoolboy Rugby League Board.

Seven teams are playing for the various trophies this season as Hikurangi Stags have returned to the competition after a one-year hiatus.

They will be joined by defending champions Takahiwai, Hora Hora, Northern Wairoa, Portland, Otangarei and Moerewa.
