Portland Panthers battled through tough conditions to win in the latest round of the RLN Scott Electrical Premiership.

Playing away from home, they handed Hora Hora Broncos a 28-10 defeat leaving them winless after 12 rounds.

Poor weather leading into the game made for slippery conditions, however both sides attempted to play in enterprising fashion.

Portland were the more accurate side, especially early on.

A knock-on 20m out from their own line put Hora Hora on the defensive early on. Portland shifted the ball out wide and sent wing Kauri McQueen-Edwards in for his first try.

Halfback Kass Hall made the tough conversion from out wide to give them a 6-0 lead three minutes in.

They doubled their lead shortly afterwards when standout fullback John Reddy made a massive bust down the left side, putting McQueen-Edwards in the corner again.

Hall again showed his ability with the boot, nailing a tough conversion.

More sustained pressure forced a Hora Hora goalline drop out.

Portland showed their willingness to shift the ball wide once again, leading to centre Hone Heke crashing over for an unconverted try.

With Portland up 16-0 inside 20 minutes, the game was in danger of turning into a blowout.

However, Hora Hora muscled up on defence and attack.

They forced multiple handling errors and penalties, gaining the ascendancy.

Back-to-back penalties on the Portland line gave Hora Hora a great opportunity to get on the scoreboard.

Five-eighth Manaaki Tawhiwhirangi took the chance with both hands, running over to give Hora Hora their first try.

The rest of the half was a real battle between both sides and the conditions.

Both sides wanted to play expansively but the ball was too slippery to hold securely.

Portland took a 16-4 lead into halftime and immediately added to their lead in the second spell.

McQueen-Edwards found himself across the line once more after a great show of quick hands.

Following the try, the scoring dried up in the poor underfoot conditions.

Both sides were eager to score points; Portland to add to their 16-point lead, Hora Hora to launch a comeback.

However, errors were plentiful with the ball incredibly tough to control, as well as both teams stepping up on defence.

They traded big hits with neither side backing down.

Hora Hora centre Bernard Cowan was a standout for the home side, punishing on defence and a handful on attack.

The floodgates opened in the last 10 minutes, with both sides scoring in a frenetic finish.

Reddy crossed twice for Portland, while Hora Hora winger Te Warahi Peterson scored a well deserved consolation try.
