The Portland Panthers have kept themselves within the top tier of the Rugby League Northland Scott Electrical Premiership standings, recording a well earned 26-12 win over Muriwhenua.
After their 48-12 demolition of Horahora in round two, Panthers coach Craig Bird credited his team's depth as a key factor to themstaying in the running as contenders for this year's premiership.
With their hard-fought win on Saturday, and strong consistency from captain Alex Solase, Portland are on track to continue their dominant form.
"[There's] still a long way to go but we're happy with where we are at," Bird said. "We've got good depth, something we've lacked in the last few years."
With both teams winning two games from two heading into round three it was anybody's game for the taking. Although Muriwhenua's defence was rigid and tough, their inability to make the most of opportunities to score proved the difference.
Both sides face difficult match-ups next week, with Muriwhenua facing Moerewa Tigers whilst Portland will have to confront 2014 Rugby League Northland premiership runners-up, Hikurangi.
