Otangarei are one step closer to an unprecedented championship after winning the preliminary final of the Scott Electrical Premiership.

They had a nail-biting 22-20 victory over Moerewa to advance to Sunday's grand final, where a rested Takahiwai is waiting for them.

The two sides put on an entertaining contest for those in attendance at Toll Stadium.

The last few minutes, in particular, provided a contest as tense as any throughout the year. Winger Dominic Ormsby and hooker Samuel Henry came to the fore for Otangarei, putting in strong performances.

Lock Verne Wilson and fullback Jordan Katene also contributed big performances as part of a huge team effort.

Moerewa didn't go away quietly and remained resilient throughout the match.

Second-rower Alex Robinson-Wiki had a big game for the losing side, as did Sepeti Tatau.

Centre Te Tuhi Tipene battled valiantly for Moerewa, crossing for a well-deserved try.
