Multiple fire engines have been called to a building fire at Port Whangārei.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand said a number of calls were received about 7.25pm reporting a fire at a commercial address on Kioreroa Rd.

“Upon arrival crews found the building well involved and escalated it to a third alarm fire,” a Fire and Emergency shift supervisor told the Herald.

“It is a two-storey commercial address approximately 20m x 30m and we have five fire trucks, one ladder truck and two support vehicles on scene.

“Fire crews are currently working to extinguish the blaze, including with the use of a ladder truck. A fire investigator is also on scene.”

A witness told the Herald the fire was located in a large warehouse with “toxic smoke billowing out”.

“Power is being cut to the road by the power company.”
