Two helicopters are battling a large fire in the Far North this morning.
Fire crews were called yesterday at 8pm to a vegetation fire burning on the shore of Whangape Harbour, near Warawara Forest Rd, south of Kaitāia.
However, fire trucks cannot easily access the blaze.
“The fire is ina remote area near the Golden Stairs Walkway area and there is no road access to the fireground for fire trucks,” a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said.
Fire crews were not aware of any buildings catching fire so far and the winds were favourable, as they were blowing the blaze towards the waters of the harbour, the spokeswoman said.
