Kiwi fans show off big royal spirit for Prince Harry and Meghan

Shouts of "I love you" could be heard from the crowd as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex walked around meeting their fans, leaving some overcome with the emotion of the occasion.

Victoria O'Brien was in tears after meeting the royal couple.

The young fan was among about 2000 members of the public who turned out to see the Duke and Duchess, Prince Harry and Meghan, outside the Pukeahu National War Memorial in Wellington.

O'Brien, who gave Meghan a bunch of flowers, said of her interaction: "She was like, just trying to calm me down... she just said to breathe,'' O'Brien said through tears.

"I can't believe this has happened. I can't believe that I met the royals.

"It's just so incredible to meet her. She's truly just a person who I aspire to become. She's just kind and lovely and she cares about everyone.''

Another lucky fan was 10-year-old Alexandra MacKay, who now surely has one of the best stories to tell her friends at school today.

She and her friend Rebecca Sainsbury, also 10, made a red rose brooch; hoping to give it to Meghan.

All their dreams came true when they not only were able to give their hand-made brooch to the Duchess, but when Meghan then chose to wear it.

Alexandra said she was "in shock'' at that.

The children's brooch was one of many special gifts presented to the royal couple during their meet-and-greet walkabout.

Other gifts included a large dog soft toy, multiple bags of the Kiwi chocolate delicacy, pineapple lumps, and another Kiwi favourite - a Buzzy Bee.

Fans near the back called out words of happiness and congratulations, with one woman shouting: "You're so beautiful, Meghan! I love you!''

Little Harry Smith, 7, had one of the best chances at catching Prince Harry's eye, with a handmade sign saying: "Hi Harry, I'm Harry.''

His efforts were rewarded when the Prince spotted it and made a beeline for him; stopping to shake his hand and share a few words.

Elizabeth Garlick's homemade sign also caught their eye.

Her sign read "Pregnancy SUITS you'' - complete with a photo of the cast of American television series Suits, including Meghan.

Garlick got to meet the royal and passed on some kōwhai leaves; congratulating her on her baby.

"I shook her hand and touched her elbow. We really were embracing each other."
