Kamo Intermediate School will play a zone final in the NZ Cup next week, vying for a chance to represent Northern Districts in a national Twenty20 competition.

The KIS team qualified for the final last summer, but have had to wait for other schools within the ND zone to play off.

The result is that Kamo Intermediate 1st XI will be facing Tauranga Intermediate on Tuesday at Bruce Pullman Park, in Counties-Manukau. The winner will represent Northern Districts in the national finals, in late November.

Coach Sam Walker said the team had progressed strongly through the competition's knockout phase without a loss and had the potential to go all the way.

Meanwhile, several KIS team members are also in the recently successful Northland A Primary Schools cricket team.

The representative team will go into their next regional competition clash boosted by a first-up win over Counties.

The Northland A and B Primary School boys cricket teams travelled to Counties on Labour Weekend for their annual clash, with the A team playing a Northern Districts competition round.

Counties batted first and totalled 210 for 3 off their 45 overs, with leg spinner Billy Alexander Crawford taking 1 for 33 off 7 overs and Cam Gordon stepping up to bowl into the wind after opening bowler Nathan Parkes fell over in the third over and fractured his wrist.

Northland's openers Luke Trigg and Sam Webb played chanceless innings with an opening stand of 156 before Luke was out for 77. Sam Webb carried on to make 59 and was out in the 41st over. Kian Bird impressed with 14 not out and Max Turner a solid 10 not out to see the team home with two balls to spare. The representative B team coached by Dean Potter secured their first victory of 2014 in a 45-over match against Counties, chasing down Counties Manukau's 113. Pasindu Mubannayaka starred with bat and ball, taking 3/11 and scoring 36 runs. Max Hart 2/15 and Braden Hutchinson-Shelford 2/16 chipped in with wickets, and Devlin Gurr 15no and Baxter Skudder 11, helped steer the side home.
