Far North schools and artists have taken out three of the top spots in a national mural contest.

Resene's Mural Masterpieces competition is open to towns, schools and communities nationwide, recognising those who help beautify New Zealand and offering $7000 in prizes.

Themes explored in the 2012 entries ranged from sea life and summer beach scenes to native birds and bush, abstract art and a make-believe playground.

The winner of the 2012 primary schools division was Riverview School in Kerikeri, whose mural was described by Resene marketing manager Karen Warman as a bold and colourful illustration of summertime in Northland.

"It touches on all the key elements of a Northland summer using a well-selected palette of colours that draws you in. The interesting composition of ideas instantly tells the story of local life and reflects the children's pride in where they live," she said.

Second place in the same category was shared by Mangonui School in Doubtless Bay and Summerland School in West Auckland.

The top prize for best community mural went to artist Dennis Latimer, who now lives at Houhora, north of Kaitaia, for a mural on Opunake Medicines and Beauty in Taranaki.

Mr Latimer is also responsible for a new mural on the rear of the shops at Paihia's Village Green telling the story of the Bay of Islands.
