Thieves have sunk to a new low in Northland after stealing from an organisation dedicated to the welfare of old soldiers, police say.
Sergeant Phil Le Comte, of Mid North police, said the Kerikeri RSA on Cobham Rd was burgled about 4am on Monday.
A security firm responded to thealarm activation some time later, found that the premises had been entered, and called police.
Officers could find no visible sign of forced entry to the building but once the offenders were inside they had forced their way into a secured internal area and taken a quantity of cash.
''It appears those responsible have reached an all-time low by targeting an organisation such as this,'' Le Comte said.
He urged anyone who had noticed people or vehicles at the RSA about 4am on Monday to call the Kerikeri police station on (09) 407 9211.
In a social media post a staff member said the organisation was struggling as it was, so it was frustrating to have hard work taken away by ''selfish low-lifes''.
A spokesman for the RSA said the club had hosted two successful events during the weekend and the takings had not been banked.
