Plunket in Kaikohe is fundraising to build a new playground for the local children.

Plunket in Kaikohe is fundraising to build a new playground for the local children.

A playground dedicated to under-5s could soon take shape in Kaikohe, but first Plunket needs to raise about $25,000.

Whānau Āwhina Plunket hopes to build a playground with a slide, tunnel, climbing wall and playhouse, which will provide a safe play space for children and a place for parents to connect.

The total cost of the project is $50,000 but Plunket has a donor willing to pay half.

Plunket, the country’s largest support service for the health and wellbeing of tamariki aged under 5, is appealing for the public’s help to raise the remaining $25,000.

“Play is so important for children’s development – both physically and socially,” Whānau Āwhina Plunket’s local clinical lead Holly Nicholl said.

“Government funding does not cover upgrades like this, so we rely on donations to support these initiatives.”

Nicholl said every dollar donated to the new Kaikohe playground will be matched by the donor.

“The local community have told us they want a safe, fenced play area like this. The playground would be open to the wider community.”

In 2024, Plunket’s Kaikohe hub underwent significant renovations thanks to generous donors.

The refreshed building offers Well Child checks, immunisations, kaiāwhina appointments, midwife clinics, a weekly playgroup and B4 School Checks with Ngāti Hine Health Trust.

“The space outside the clinic is ideal for a community playground,” Nicholl said.

The playground will be similar to one at Plunket’s Meadowbank site in Auckland.

Kaikohe kids could soon be enjoying a flash new playground similar to this one in Meadowbank, Auckland, if Plunket is successful in raising funds it needs to build one.

Whānau Āwhina Plunket currently supports around 350 tamariki in Kaikohe.

With parents, caregivers and wider community use, it’s estimated the playground would benefit more than 1000 locals each year.
