Kaikohe teenager Natasha Williams is joining the blogosphere, and hoping for strong interest from those who will follow her.
Miss Williams, 18, is one of 10 new University of Auckland students who have been selected to write for "The Inside Word", a blog that will tell what it's reallylike to begin tertiary studies.
"I hope my blog will inspire teens from small rural towns like Kaikohe to further their education," the former Northland College deputy head girl said.
"I understand it can be very hard for rural kids to imagine going to university because of financial barriers, or because none of their peers are going on to tertiary education.
"I hope I can show that it is possible to make it to university, and have a great time while you are there."
The role of Inside Word blogger is keenly sought after. Bloggers, who are paid for each fortnightly post, are asked to give the lowdown on everything there is to know about transitioning from secondary school to university, straight from the people who are experiencing it.
They are chosen based on their writing ability, enthusiasm, creativity, and ability to connect with readers.
Miss Williams has begun a conjoint Bachelor of Commerce and Arts degree, majoring in marketing/information systems and sociology.
She is living on campus at O'Rorke Hall, a first-year-only residence that accommodates students in independent single rooms in a pod-style formation on each floor.
"My first few weeks have been a great experience. I've been meeting people from all parts of the world and exploring Auckland's city centre, and I love the different way classes are structured compared to high school," she said.
Last year Ms Williams was awarded a $20,000 University of Auckland Academic Potential Scholarship.
