A 25-year-old Irish woman suffered head injuries in a bike accident and is in a serious condition at Whangarei Hospital.

An Irish visitor has been seriously injured in a quad bike accident on Northland farm.

The accident occurred about 1pm on Tuesday on a private gravel road off Signal Rd, near Okaihau Golf Club.

St John Mid North operations manager Mark Going said paramedics responded initially by road, then called in the Northland Rescue Helicopter to fly the injured 25-year-old woman to Whangarei Hospital. She had suffered head injuries and was in a serious condition.

Mr Going urged anyone riding a bike, whether for transport or recreation, to always wear a helmet to reduce the chances of injury. Senior Sergeant Brian Swann, of Kaikohe police, said the woman's mother in Ireland had been informed.

It is thought she had been on a working holiday in New Zealand. Her condition at edition time on Wednesday day was not known.
