Grant McLeod says there will be long term benefits for Northland hockey with the promotion of WBHS from reserve grade to premier grade.
Whangarei Boys' High School's premier hockey side has been rewarded for a strong 2016 with entry into the Northland Premier Competition this year.
WBHS dominated the reserve grade in 2016, taking it out comfortably.
After WBHS applied to the Whangarei Club Council Executive last June, Hockey Northland went through athorough consultative process before deciding on letting the side play in the top grade.
Hockey Northland CEO Grant McLeod said it was a good decision despite any potential backlash from certain sectors.
"There may be concerns from clubs and individuals regarding the move to add them to our premier competition, but we feel this is a very positive move for Boys' High," he said.
