Hockey: Late goals give Whangarei girls first win of the season

Two goals in the final 10 minutes gave Whangarei Girls' High School their first win of the season when they beat Parihaka 3-1 in their reserve A women's hockey match.

The scores were tied 1-all at halftime in the tightly contested match before an attacking break by Girls' High led to a one-on-one opportunity with the goal keeper.

Aimee Scott pounced on the rebounded save to take the lead with less than 10 minutes to go.

Olivia Crum got her second goal of the game when she converted a penalty corner not long after, to give Girls' High an unassailable 3-1 lead with just minutes to play.

Girls' High coach Lucy de Pass was happy with the way her team performed.

"The girls are growing more confident in every game. [They] did a lot more passing, using each other and thinking."

Friday night's win moves Girls' High one place above Parihaka into sixth on the competition table, with one win and one draw from five games.

In other reserve A women's matches, the three competition leaders all had wins. Front runners Old Girls beat Kamo High School 4-1 while second placed Maungakaramea came away with a 4-3 win over fourth-placed Springfield. Hikurangi beat Mangapai 4-0 to hold on to third spot.

In the reserve men's grade on Thursday, Whangarei Boys' High School beat Bream Bay 6-3. Mangapai beat Springfield 6-3 and Maungakaramea beat Kamo High School 8-0. Hora Hora are still in second place.
