Bella Homes Whangārei owner Simon Crawford is stoked after his company won three gold medals, with two category winners, at the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2018 House of the Year competition.

Bella Homes Whangārei owner Simon Crawford is stoked after his company won three gold medals, with two category winners, at the Auckland Registered Master Builders 2018 House of the Year competition.

After three years judging the Auckland Registered Master Builders' House of the Year competition Whangārei builder Simon Crawford could enter the event again.

And he's delighted he did after his company, Bella Homes Whangārei, won three gold medals, including two category winners, at this year's competition on Saturday night.

Bella Homes won a gold medal in the Carters New Home $1million to $2million category for a home in Whangārei; a gold and category winner in the New Home $550,000 to $700,000 for a home in Kerikeri and gold and another category winner in the GIB Show Home award for a show home in a Maungatapere subdivision.

The awards had almost unprecedented success for Northland homes, with a home built by Oliver Tuck Ltd earning gold in the New Home over $2million category, for a home at Marsden Pt, while Marcus Jones Ltd also got gold in the New Home $1million to $2million category, for a property at Mangawhai. Landmark Homes Northland won silver in the same category for a home built in Waipū.

Crawford, who won a national title in 2014 for a home at Moureeses Bay, said having good staff and sub contractors who he'd worked with for a number of years, and listening to what the client wants are two areas that contributed to the success.

''It's great for the industry to have so much success from Northland builders this year and for us, it shows that we are up there with the best builders around. There's a lot of competition out there, but the thing that makes us really happy is that it shows we have a consistency in our quality of build. Three golds from three entries shows our building is of a very high standard, consonantly, which is great.''

Crawford said he had an experienced team of staff and great subbies that he had used for years and that had helped.

''But having good ears is critical. You have to listen to what he customer wants and you have to be totally involved from the design stage to completion,'' Crawford said.
