Hokianga water restrictions

Water restrictions begin today for all homes and businesses on town water supply in Ōmanaia to Rāwene, and Ōpononi to Ōmāpere. The level 2 water restrictions ban the use of sprinklers and irrigation systems.

Far North District Council said there has been a steady decline in river levels.

Easy water-saving tips include only using the washing machine or dishwasher when you have a full load, and putting a half-full soft drink bottle in your toilet cistern to reduce the quantity of water you flush. Go to bewaterwise.org.nz more tips and details about Northland’s water supplies.

Circus festival

Northland’s Circus Kumarani is hosting a Circus Festival in January, where people can learn circus activities such as fire and glow shows.

Circus Kumarani’s 19th Northland Circus Festival will be held at Mangakahia Sports Complex from January 9 to 11, with workshops, music, live art and circus shows for all ages and abilities. It also has a magical marketplace and live music and art. Participants will get to show off their new skills at night shows each day. For more details, go to circuskumarani.co.nz

Kayaking safety

Free kayaking safety workshops are set for Whangārei and Bay of Islands in the next few weeks as part of the KayakSafe NZ programme, run by the Kiwi Association of Sea Kayakers (KASK) with Safer Boating Forum funding support from Maritime New Zealand.

The workshops are held throughout the country, and are presented by experienced KASK members volunteering their time to share their knowledge. Topics include understanding the environment, hazards, weather and interpreting marine forecasts, essential safety equipment, communication devices, suitable clothing, trip planning and what to do in emergencies.

Workshops run at Taurikura Hall, Whangārei Heads, from 9.30am on January 10 and at Bay of Islands Yacht Club, Waitangi from 10am on February 14.
