Marsden Point could accommodate cruise ships

Marsden Point could accommodate cruise ships

Mr Yovich says cruise ships aren't compatible at Marsden Point. He should have done his research. Northport has agreed to accommodate cruise ships. It encourages them because it sees the benefit of potentially $40 million p.a. to the community. An incentive for cruise ships will be lower-cost fuel at Marsden Point. Marsden Point is acceptable to the cruise industry, once Hundertwasser Wairau Maori Art Centre (HWMAC) gives us a "point of difference".

Mr Yovich says it is false to say his Harbourside will cost ratepayers $900,000 p.a. But it was district council staff who assessed Harbourside to cost ratepayers $900,000 p.a.

Is Mr Yovich saying the district council is wrong? Once approval is given, the 10-year indemnity will be finalised with community-minded individuals and organisations.

Interestingly, Northland Regional Council members said there is no need for an indemnity, because the business case for the Maori art centre is so strong.

So, the Maori art centre only needs the indemnity finalised; and funds raised ($5 million previously arranged).

But compare Harbourside - $900,000 annual cost to ratepayers, with no indemnity against losses; no plans drawn; no LTP approval obtained; no resource consent granted; no tenants for the building; no art collection; no maritime collection; no funding arranged; won't attract tourists; won't attract cruise ships; won't attract a hotel; no boost to commercial activity; no vibrancy; and only half the size of the Maori art centre.

Hundertwasser will benefit us with jobs and income.

Harbourside will cost us.
