Onerahi residents appear to be targeted in a spate of car break-ins, writes a reader.

I am one of the victims of the spate of car break-ins in Onerahi - twice now.

The first time, in February, they not only broke a window but also tore out my ignition. The second time, on a night when my neighbour's car was also broken into, they stole my umbrella and jumper cables. We don't have garages available and have to park out in the open, though it is off the street.

My guess is that these break-ins are perpetrated by a gang of local youths roaming around on foot in the wee hours looking for opportunities to steal. I think they could be apprehended, or at least discouraged from victimising the residents of this neighbourhood, if the police stepped up the patrolling of the area in the late night and early morning hours. Why don't they?
