Some Whangarei councillors want the Hundertwasser Art Centre project scuttled.
The HAC proposal would see an art gallery/museum built in Whangarei as a tourism attraction, in the style of the late Austrian and New Zealand artist Friedrich Hundertwasser.
The proposed building is based on a sketch by Hundertwasser, and has the blessing of the Austrian Hundertwasser Non Profit Foundation.
The project will cost $13 million - $8 million will come from ratepayers or council-sourced funding, and $5 million needs to be raised from outside sources.
Councillors are planning to debate the issue next Wednesday.
