TV One weather man Sam Wallace made an appearance at the Whangarei Town Basin.

TV One weather man Sam Wallace made an appearance at the Whangarei Town Basin.

On Tuesday July 13, TV One weather man Sam Wallace was in Whangarei and invited viewers to come and join him. Breakfast presenter Ali Pugh asked him whereabouts he was in Whangarei and Sam replied, "I'm down here at the marina". Ali responded enthusiastically, "I love Whangarei!" Wasn't that heart-warming to hear?

Even more heart-warming was seeing our hometown hero, Alistair McIntyre, receiving his well-deserved award. Not a dry eye in our house!

Of course, when asked where he was, Sam should have said, "I'm at the Town Basin," but I'm so glad he didn't. Isn't it time we got rid of that uninspiring name and changed it to one that evokes an image of what is becoming an increasingly desirable part of our city?

As a traveller arriving from the south, I'm sure I'd find a signpost saying "Marina" far more enticing than "Town Basin".

Editor's note: Interesting point Patricia, I've touched on it in an editorial today.
