The Hundertwasser-style entrance of the Birkdale Intermediate library building.

The Hundertwasser-style entrance of the Birkdale Intermediate library building.

On Friday, November 28, TV1 featured an article describing how the principal of Birkdale [Intermediate] School took inspiration from viewing the Hundertwasser toilets in Kawakawa on a trip north, went back, enthused his pupils, and raised $80,000 to build a Hundertwasser entrance way to their school library.

Their pride and pleasure in the completed structure was patently obvious. At the conclusion of this clip, it was announced Prosper Northland had lost millions of dollars of funding because the Whangarei District Council couldn't decide whether to build the Hundertwasser et al or not.

Thanks councillors, especially the naysayers and vote swingers, you made this fair city of ours look like blithering fools on national TV.

The Birkdale principal and children certainly took it to you. Next local elections, I plan to vote for the children of Whangarei with their vision, courage, honesty, determination and decorum to run our affairs. I wish the current go-getters luck.
