Gwen Lawson: Another successful week for Northland bowls

Congratulations to the Northland Open Women's team who were announced team of the year at the Northland Sports awards last Friday evening.

The team was Sue Wightman (singles); Marny Jones and Leanne Stewart (pairs); Maureen Parker, Maree Attwood, Lauren Mills, Diane Lawrence (Fours). The manager and coach were Jane Walker and Ann Muir. Congratulations also to Maureen Parker and Gordon Bond who were winners of the bowls awards for 2016.

Well done to the Northland Kitty Hawks who held a fundraising tournament at Mangawhai greens recently.

The Logan Stables were a major sponsor. Winners were John Young's team from Kerikeri with the runner-up being an Ian Bowick team from Onerahi.

Twenty one teams including five from Auckland Kitty Hawks competed and the fundraising effort raised $2000 for the Northland Rescue Helicopter.

Also making a fundraising effort recently was the Masonic Trust Charity tournament held at the Kamo greens, featuring 32 teams. Prizes were distributed to both greens and the winners were Kelvin Bint, Noel Bint, Anne Bateman and Ken Fitness (Hikurangi) and Des McLean, Jenny Hardie, B. Lindsay and Ken Proctor of One Tree Point. $3000was raised for the Blind Foundation's guide dogs. In 2018 this tournament will have been running continually for 50 years.

Representative weekend: This Saturday will see action at the Kensington and Kamo greens where the regional tournament for 1-5 and 1-8 year bowlers will be held.

The men will be at Kensington and the women at Kamo Bowling Club. Play starts at 9.30am. Teams from Far North, North Harbour, Auckland and Northland will be competing for their coveted trophies.

On Sunday the open representative squads will be having a quadrangular tournament at the Kensington greens.

Men and women will compete against North Harbour, Far North, Auckland and Northland in singles, pairs and fours.

This will be the first official outing for these Northland teams. The New Zealand event for these teams will be held later in the season.
