Whangarei took out the Northland Handicap Pennant Final in interesting circumstances at Sherwood Golf Club.

Whangarei, the South Zone champions, beat North Zone champions Okaihau after bad light ended play early.

After an hour's delay due to heavy frost and with supporters patiently waiting, the morning matches got under way.

All three matches were extremely close and all were decided on the 18th green with Whangarei prevailing two matches to one.

After lunch the teams headed back out to play their singles matches with Whangarei needing to pick up three wins to grab the title.

Unfortunately, because of the late start, bad light meant the afternoon matches were called off as the remaining players were on the 16th tee.

At that point, there were still two matches still alive with both Whangarei players ahead of their opponents and Whangarei needing one more win for the title.

Under the rules, in the event of play being called off the winner is decided on the morning's results.

This gave Whangarei the title.

The final was played in great spirit and sportsmanship and was a credit to the two clubs.
