Game takes top science prize

A computer game designed to help students learn about electrical circuits was this year's overall winner of the Central Northland Science Fair.

The exhibit - Circuit Training With Smart Alex - by Year 9 Whangarei Boys' High student Callum Anderson won six accolades, including Spark Digital best overall winner.

Callum also collected Best Year 9-10 Exhibit Award, Best Year 9-10 Technology Award, Best Overall - Technology, McKay Electrical Award and Genesis Energy Nominations for Realise the Dream,

Central Northland Science Fair chairwoman Clare Davies-Colley said Forum North was at capacity this year, with 192 exhibits by 233 students.

"The standard of exhibits was outstanding - the standard improves every year."

The fair is an annual event that has been running since 1980 and features students' work from schools in across central Northland.

Other category winners included:

Year 7: Presentation, Grace Wiegersma, from Matarau School; Outstanding Experimental Technique, Jodie Orford, Pompallier College; Applied Science, Tori-Lee Brown and Emma Howell, Pompallier College; Investigation, Max Robertson, Whangarei Intermediate; Technology, Lexi Laybourn, Kamo Intermediate; Research Award and Exhibit Award, Isaac Williams Matarau School.

Year 8: Presentation Award, Ruby Reed and Zahna Campbell Huanui College; Outstanding Experimental Technique Award - Emily Luxford, Pompallier; Applied Science Award and Investigation Award, Ollie Clarke from Matarau; Technology Award and Exhibit Award - Jessie Taylor Maungatapere School

Year 9-10: Presentation Award and Applied Science Award, Shannon Clarke Excellere College; Outstanding Experimental Technique Award and Investigation Award, Lauryn Smith, Whangarei Girls' High; Research Award - Isabella Anderson, Whangarei Girls' High.

Year 11-13: Presentation Award, Outstanding Experimental Technique Award, Investigation Award, Exhibit Award, Kelsey Ferris, Whangarei Girls' High; Research Award - Mihi Shepherd, Whangarei Girls' High.
