A large fire has broken out in Northland's Waipoua Forest, the home of the famed Tane Mahuta kauri.
About 2km of scrub was reported on fire about 4.15pm on Thursday and eight fire engines and four helicopters were on their way to the blaze, Fire Service northern communications shift managerSteve Smith said.
Communications in the area were poor and no further details were available.
There were also no 4WD tracks in the area, which would make fire fighting difficult.
Mr Smith was not sure if the fire was in the vicinity of 51m-tall Tane Mahuta, the largest living kauri tree in New Zealand.
