Fatal crash on SH1 Whangarei

Emergency services staff at the scene of a fatal crash on Western Hills Drive in Whangarei

UPDATE: One person is dead following a fatal crash in Whangarei this morning.

About 7.40am a vehicle was seen speeding north along Western Hills Dr (SH1).
Another vehicle went to pull out of a side lane (opposite Kensington Avenue) and was hit by the northbound vehicle.

The male driver and sole occupant of the northbound vehicle died at the scene and the male driver of the other vehicle was taken to Whangärei Hospital with moderate injuries.

Police believe that speed was factor in the crash. They would also like to speak to any witnesses in the area at the time who may have seen the crash and the northbound black Mitsubishi Libero prior to the crash.

They would also like to speak to the driver of a late model light blue Volkswagen car.

Police and Emergency services are currently at the scene of a serious collision involving two cars on SH1, Western Hills Drive, Kensington, Whangarei.

Diversions are currently in place at Percy Street and Western Hills Drive and again at Kensington and Western Hills Drive.

Traffic is therefore being diverted onto Kamo Road and Police advise motorists to avoid this area if possible. The Road is expected to be closed for some time.
