A Far North couple are heading for a very merry Christmas after winning $1 million on Lotto.

The couple won the amount in last Wednesday’s Lotto First Division draw.

They bought their ticket from Four Square Coopers Beach and have been waiting for a big win since Lotto began almost 40 years ago.

The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, have been regular players since Lotto started in 1987.

“My husband buys every draw, just a lucky dip – this time it was very lucky,” the wife said.

The couple were relaxing at home on Wednesday evening when the live Lotto draw came on TV.

The man started checking their numbers as usual, realising he had matched all six.

“He was making some strange noises,” his wife said.

“I looked up from my book and said, ‘What’s the matter with you?’.

“Six numbers, six numbers, six numbers is all he could say to me.”

However, there had been a false alarm before.

“He did this years ago and he was wrong. His reputation preceded him, so I made him hand it over so I could check it,” the wife said.

After double-checking the ticket, she said it felt unbelievable.

They didn’t know how much they had won and had to wait until the official results were confirmed on MyLotto.

“When we saw online that only one person had won, we were stunned,” she said.

With their prize safely claimed, the couple were looking to the future and planning some small home renovations and investing the rest of their win.

The pair are the 47th Lotto millionaires this year.

The winning Lotto numbers that night were 3, 9, 24, 30, 38 and 40.
