Eight-year-old Nicole Ruddell's calf Lightning was judged heavy breed reserve champion at the Central Day event.

Eight-year-old Nicole Ruddell's calf Lightning was judged heavy breed reserve champion at the Central Day event.

Entries were up on last year with 149 children from 18 schools taking part in the Whangarei Group Calf Club's annual Central Day at Barge Park Showgrounds in Whangarei last Thursday.

Hukerenui School trailed Maungatapere on the points table, but its win in the calf team section and runner-up placing with its goats team were sufficient for Hukerenui to pick up the Fonterra Participation Award.
