Fights, burglaries, fires and a crash - emergency services were busy over the Easter Weekend.

A man was taken to hospital in a serious condition after two people were injured during a fight at Ruakaka.

The alleged assault was one of a number of callouts that kept Northland's emergency services busy over the long weekend.

Two men were also taken to hospital after their motorcycles collided at Ahipara.

Whangarei police Senior Sergeant Cliff Metcalfe said officers were called to a property in One Tree Pt Rd about 9.45pm on Saturday after reports of two men fighting.

There were three people at the address drinking when the two men got into a fight, he said. One of the men was rushed to hospital with what was initially thought to be a serious head injury, but he was discharged in early yesterday morning after receiving stitches.

Whangarei police CIB is investigating and no further details were available at edition time.

Meanwhile, two motorbikes collided in sand dunes on Saturday afternoon. Emergency services were contacted about the crash at Shipwreck Bay in Ahipara about 5pm on Saturday.

Police and ambulance paramedics made their way to the scene of the crash in the sand dunes, but the isolated location made communication difficult.

A Fire Service spokesman said one man was transferred to Whangarei Hospital by the Northland Electricity Rescue Helicopter in a serious condition while another man was taken by ambulance to Kaitaia Hospital with minor injuries.

Mr Metcalfe said there were a number of callouts keeping police busy across the regions this holiday weekend with the number of burglaries causing concern.

He said many of the break-ins were of homes where people had gone away for the holiday weekend and left windows or even doors open or unlocked.

Mr Metcalfe said in the 24 hours to yesterday afternoon there had been five burglaries in the Tikipunga area alone and three of them were homes where people had gone away and left a window open or door unlocked. He said homeowners should never leave a window open or door unlocked.

Meanwhile, Mangonui firefighters were called out to a car fire that ended up burning a large area of scrub on Parapara-Toatoa Rd, Taipa, at 5.12pm on Saturday

The car caught alight at the side of the road and the flames spread to dry scrub and vegetation, keeping the firefighters occupied for about 80 minutes.

A number of other callouts, ranging from false alarms to scrub and vegetation fires, kept firefighters busy across Northland over the long weekend.

Police were also out in force on the region's roads, with an influx of Easter visitors in the region.
