Specialist police divers have been sent to the Bay of Islands to help with the extraction of a diver who failed to surface near Moturoa Island.
The police squad were expected to arrive this afternoon following the fatal incident this morning.
Senior Sergeant Ryan Gray said the alarm was raised
about 8.30am after the diver struck trouble near Moturoa Island, in the Bay of Islands.
The Police Maritime Unit, a commercial dive boat and the Northland Rescue Helicopter attended the scene. A paramedic was winched down onto nearby rocks.
After 10am, the diver was confirmed deceased in the water.
Police said the death will be referred to the Coroner.
