Device calls kids to table

Tangiteroria School is one of the first in the country to have a giant iPad - known as the ActivTable.

It's a $12,000 interactive touch-screen table with a 46-inch high definition LCD display that principal Braden Eades describes as "another tool for learning".

"It goes along with what we've got set up with our information and communications technology curriculum which includes the interactive whiteboards for seniors" he said.

Senior students also get to use the table; but Mr Eades said juniors get priority and can "get the whole class around it with six kids hands-on at a time".

"It's hands-on and interactive and mentally challenging - it also suits their height."

It uses a Windows operating system and has fun, education-based type programmes and applications designed by Promethean especially for kids aged four to 11, he said.

"But it can also access internet and email. It really helps provide confidence in technology use generally," he said.

The Tangiteroria Home and School Association footed the $12,000 bill, after holding several fundraiser events such as trail rides.

And the children consider that every cent was well spent.

"They were blown away, it was a huge surprise," Mr Eades said.
