A Destiny Church-affiliated motorcycle rider was killed following a crash involving five motorbikes in Northland.

It is understood Darren Wilson had been accompanying Far North mayoral candidate Jay Hepi, alongside church leaders Brian Tamaki and his wife Hannah, in Northland.

Emergency services were called to accident on State Highway 1, just north of Turntable Hill, Moerewa, about 3.10pm yesterday.

Brian Tamaki wrote: "It is wth sadness of heart that i post this.A beautiful brother nd friend died frm his injuries in a motocycle accident yesterday.He was doing wat he loved most..Riding for th Cause of Christ nd people.Tu Tangata Darren Wilson Love nd blessing Moe Mai Ra Bro." [Sic]

His wife wrote: "he loved us, and we him.. It's heartbreaking hearing he has passed( Darren Wilson ) our dear brother. We spoke today, you gave me your big smile, that shy smile.. I sit here now seeing that. You were committed to us... We never imagined the pain we feel now. There are no words, that can ease the shock & numbness

"Our Aroha to your family and friends. You had a special place in our hearts, your gentle spirit, your soft voice.. and you live in my home town.. to all who love you Darren, we are proud to tell them we love you too..

"I pray God gives us strength together, to heal and be the people Darren saw us to be, part of his family.. brothers together in Christ Jesus. Our condolences, Arohanui Brian & I."

Police confirmed the man was being transported to Auckland Hospital following the crash, however he died.

Two other riders were injured in the crash, including one who is serious and the other who suffered moderate injuries, a police spokeswoman said.

Enquiries into the crash were underway.

One man who witnessed the cluster of "about 40 to 50 riders" zoom past just moments before the crash said it was terrifying.

It's believed the motorcyclists were riding in a group when some of the members collided with each other.

This is understood to have forced five of the bikes off the road.

Mayoral candidate Hepi refused to comment at the scene and left in his campaign ute.

The riders were from the Destiny Church-affiliated Tu Tangata Riders or Man Up movement.

It is understood the church is holding another event today, its Tamariki Fun Day at the Kaikohe Skatepark, followed by an event at the Te Puna Wai Ora Stadium in Kataia.

Several people have paid tribute on social media.

Caine Warren wrote: "We hugged for the last time today my brother.

"You were my go to when we had crisis calls in Tokoroa you would respond immediately to rescue people who were in trouble.
