Curtis Cherrington scored a fantastic 145 and took two wickets to propel Kamo into a strong position in their Oxford Trust two-day cricket match against Maungakaramea.

Cherrington built on his good knock of 83 against Onerahi-Central last weekend to lead the run-scoring on Saturday, as Kamo reached 309 in their first innings, with another in-form batsman, Ben Hyde, contributing 92 to the total.

Only Cody Andrews, who took six wickets, had any luck with the ball for Maungakaramea. Any relief felt by the visitors to the Kamo Rec when they finally chipped out Kamo, quickly turned to dismay when their top order failed to establish themselves.

Cherrington took two for 15 off eight overs and any hope of a middle-order fightback now looks highly unlikely when play resumes next Saturday, with Maungakaramea reeling at 66/5.

City took the advantage in their match at Kensington Park against Onerahi-Central after Marko Annadale got them off to a good start by taking five wickets as OC were bowled out for 172.

William Edwards' (53) and Andrew Vickers' (39) sixth-wicket partnership of 80-odd at least gave the OC bowlers a glimmer of hope but a patient opening partnership of 120 between Joe Yovich and Zac Khawaja extinguished any chance of first innings points.

Yovich top-scored with 69, with Ian Page (60) and Khawaja (43) seeing City to 202/4 at stumps, with Henry Cooper taking all four wickets.

At Kaipara, Zest Insurance Whangarei Boys High School were put into bat and did well to score 242 in 94 overs. Michael Parlane top-scored with 88, supported by Sam Clotworthy (35) and John Child (26).

Matt Taylor was the pick of the Kaipara bowlers taking six for 41 off 18.
