Cricket: Kaipara Flats, City wrap up titles on final day of club season

Rain continued to be a defining factor in Northland club cricket right until the final day as the last two titles were decided.

Kaipara Flats wrapped up the Oxford Trust Two Day competition with first innings points against Onerahi Central while Duracrete Products City won the reserve grade T20 title in a rarely-seen bowl-off against Kamo High.

Kaipara Flats and Onerahi Central turned up to Kensington Park to find a wet pitch and outfield but some much-needed sunshine dried out both to get the match underway an hour and a half late.

The visitors needed just six deliveries to end Onerahi's innings at 106 with Kyran Dill finishing with brilliant figures of 7 for 20.

Kaipara Flats found the going fairly easy as Northland representatives Rory Christopherson and Matt Taylor worked to quickly knock off the required runs.

Matt Taylor eventually fell on 47 but at 96 for 2, the result was as good as secured.

Christopherson made his way through to an impressive knock of 64 as he and Dill (25 not out) saw Kaipara Flats to 140 for two before both captains shook hands to end the contest.

Meanwhile City beat Kamo High in interesting circumstances to win their second reserve grade title.

The final at Cobham Oval was only 12 overs old before forecast rain set in.

The game was delicately poised with City sitting at 65 for 2 with Joey Yovich at the crease on 39 not out.

Both teams then went into the Johnston Crawford Indoor Centre for a bowl-off, where five players from each side had one delivery to knock over the stumps.

The task proved more difficult than many would expect as only Reagan Radford toppled the stumps to deliver City the title.

Earlier in the day Kamo High qualified for the final with a tense semifinal victory over Bream Bay.

The game was reduced to 16 overs and Kamo High set a tricky target for their opposition as they scored 113 for three.

Nathan Parkes led the way with a composed 53 not out while Geoff Parker contributed 38 important runs.

Bream Bay looked in control of things at 84 for three with five overs remaining thanks to Dean Gillingham's 25 but a top stint of bowling from Roger Turner (3 for 6) and Parkes (2 for 6) sealed a tight win.
